Disaster Relief
In the spring of 2004 massive mudslides killed many in Nicaragua and left thousands homeless. The surviving victims having lost everything, have been placed in refugee camps where they live with little space and privacy. Food is in short supply, sanitation is inadequate, and illness is prevalent. Many have been living in tents for almost a year as they wait for news of more permanent living opportunities.
OWH has been visiting these camps and has brought food, clothing, shoes, blankets, vitamins and medicine to very grateful recipients. We have also purchased baseball equipment, supported a church musical program and contributed equipment to provide recreational activities and videos for the children and adults, as boredom has become a problem for these hardworking people who prefer to be productive, but have lost their livelihoods in farming.
A contribution of about $1000 can provide a truckload of much needed food including milk for the children as well as other staples for the camps. Our teams will be continuing to bring aid to these camps, some accessible only by horseback, on upcoming short term missions trips.
